AIDAcp / EACTS JOINT MEETING - CME APPROVED
REGISTRATION AND ACCOMMODATION
The meeting will provide an overview on the rapid and fascinating development in the field of the adenocarcinoma of the lung:
Primary adenocarcinoma of the lung is an entity which differs in prognosis and treatment from other subtypes of Non Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC). The incidence of this subtype of NSCLC is increasing even in non-smokers and surgeons and oncologists have to make new therapeutic decisions ranging from conservative treatment, resection strategies up to lung transplantation.
A new pathological classification has been established by the WHO in 2004 and imaging, including nuclear medicine and radiology, has a number of specific aspects to this disease.
Recent evidence demonstrates that genetic differences, as for example mutations of the Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor / EGFR-gene, dramatically alter response to therapy and prognosis.
Smoking history, gender, race, pathologic subtype (M-BAC or NM-BAC, degree of BAC), and specific EGFR and K-ras mutations may predict sensitivity/resistance and survival benefit from Tyrosine Kinase Inhibitors (TKI). Moreover, diagnostic methods can select patients who will benefit from EGFR inhibition, including FISH and immunohistochemistry evaluation of the erb-B, K-ras, MAP-K, and Akt pathways. In addition, the role of conventional chemotherapy has to be redefined.
The thoracic surgical community has to be aware of these new developments and has to enhance and to contribute to the communication with the other specialities in the field.
The location of the meeting and co-organization with AIDAcp (Italian Association of Women Against Lung Cancer) has been established, as AIDAcp is performing a molecular survey on this type of cancer in Tuscany which will be preliminarly presented (AIDAcp Project on lung Adenocarcinoma)
